Based on London Road in the city. Sanderson & Holmes Ltd were selling Triumph cars in the 1930's and continued to do so after the second world war.  At various times the business also sold other brands including Daimler, Jaguar, Morris, Rolls Royce and Bentley. Towards the end of the their involvement with Standard Triumph products they were restricted to dealing in new Standards only according to dealers directory listings in 1959 and 1961.

The company has its origins in the 19th century starting out as a coachbuilder called Holmes. They appear in a 1896 telephone directory with the number Derby 8 which they still had in 1927.  Their works had many trades involved including at one point a full blacksmiths shop that could manufacture leaf springs. It is said that the trim shop was asked to fit real leopard skins to a Jaguar for the band leader Ray Ellington.

Standard Triumph dealers in Gainsborough

In April 1951 the Standard Triumph franchise for Gainsborough was held by a firm called Shipley & Co Ltd based in premises on the Market Place.

By October 1955 Pullan & Son Bridge Street are listed in the Standard Triumph dealer directory. They are also listed in 1959, 1961, 1965. However by September 1968 they are not listed.

I understand that the Pullan & Son Bridge Street building was demolished in 1968 or 1969.

There are no Triumph dealers listed 1972 or 1974.  Baine Bros Ltd, North Street, Gainsborough DN21 2HY are listed as a Rover and Triumph dealer in May 1975. By March 1988 Rocar (Gainsborough) Ltd, 30 North Street, DN21 2HY are listed as a Austin Rover dealer but as the Triumph marque was discontinued in 1984  would have only offered service to Standard Triumph vehicles.

Triumph Car Dealer stickers - Triumph car dealers

I have featured several rear windows stickers in my articles about Standard Triumph car dealers and this article will feature several stickers that are non dealer specific.

Show and Service Week

Triumph Show and Service Week sticker
Triumph Show and Service Week sticker
I have read elsewhere that the factory used to provide assistance with "Show and Service Week" promotions at garages around the UK. The sticker shown above is a rare survivor. I wonder if such promotions occurred in overseas sales areas such as the United States of America or Australia.

"Show and Service Week" promotions would be a week and regularly got a write up in the company magazine the Standard Triumph Review.  Often a timetable for the forth coming month would included in the magazine. I can see the events started in the 1950's and were still going in the last 1960's.

TR4 Promotion

These stickers were recently shared with me by on facebook. Here are the instructions for use.

INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Stickers may be applied safely to showroom windows, walls, doors, et cetera.
  2. When used on automobiles, it is advisable to place stickers on car windows, bumpers, and hub caps.
  3. If stickers are used on painted surfaces of car, it is advisable to change their location about every 10 days, remembering to peel them off carefully.

Scottish Motor Show

The 42nd Scottish Motor Show was held just following the London Show. Unlike the London Show it was held only every other year, and the 1959 Show was the fifth since the war. As usual it was staged in the Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, and was opened by the Earl of Selkirk, First Lord of the Admiralty.

Again, unlike the London Show, cars are not displayed by the manufacturers but by the Distributors and Dealers who are members of the Scottish Motor Trades Association. Examples of cars are, therefore, seen on many stands, Standard-Triumph cars being found on no fewer than eleven.
