The Chequed Flag group were distributors of the Ogle SX1000.

The Chequered Flag group

The Chequed Flag group was a specialist sports car dealer.
According to an article in Motosport May 1960.
the Chequered Flag Group of Companies now covers four ventures. The showroom at Chiswick sells sports cars only, as does the showroom in Nottingham, while a new building has been erected at Edgware which sells competition and Grand Touring cars. The workshops for building the Gemini Junior are also completely separate.

Christmas Gifts

North Stafford Motors advert Staffordshire Sentinel 13 December 1938

This advert that featured in the Staffordshire Sentinel 13 December 1938 was accompanied by the following article.

The motorist who takes a pride in his car and appreciates driving comfort will find a selection of gifts in the display at the well-equipped showrooms of North Stafford Motors, Ltd, of Broad Street, Hanley, that will add to the pleasure of motoring.

One of the novelties offered this year is the “screen defroster,” which accomplishes all that is promised by the name of this useful gift. The gadget fits across the windscreen and consists of four wire elements, which, by the warmth radiated, prevents frost adhering to the windscreen. In this way one of the dangers of winter driving is removed.

Another accessory which is almost indispensable is a car heater, of which many varieties are to be found in the display. One of the most economical fittings of this type has a small motor, which uses
the water from the cooling system and radiates heat round the car.

In the same class is the heating lamp made for fitting under the sump, keeping the oil at an even temperature, This fitting can be obtained in various sizes, and the length of use is ftom 150 to 200
hours.

Included in the list are the new “ Dunlopillos,” for use in cars in which the upholstery is showing signs of wear. These useful gifts are moderate in price, and add to driving comfort.

Stainless Stephens choice

Quoting from an article in the Standard Triumph Review May 1968.

Yet another personality has chosen the Triumph 1300 as his car. In the photograph Mr. W. T. Kay, Sales Manager of Davis Garage, Sevenoaks, Kent, is seen handing over the key to the new owner Mr. A. C. Baynes. Older readers will remember Mr. Baynes better as Stainless Stephen, a pre-war top of the bill artiste on radio and stage. Stainless Stephen lives with his son who is a farmer at Chiddingstone in the
heart of Kent, and his son is also a Triumph owner having a 2000.

For many years the garage was an approved MOT testing garage.

Business closed down

I understand that the business closed down in the early 1990's.  The Rumbold Street garage ended by selling Citroen cars. I think that building is now used by the Lincolnshire archives.  They then moved out to a 3 garage site on Wragby Road but only Citroens were sold under the Mansbridge name. The Wragby site was selling furniture in 2009 having stopped selling cars during the late 1990's.

I was recently sent photos of a very shiny cup that appears to have been awarded to Mr Mansbridge in 1953. At the time he was driving a Jaguar.  The cup was given to the the Lincs and Louth Motor Club following the death of Mr Mansbridge.
