Hi Steve, I've just found your blog after googling Dunns Garage. It's brought back some good memories. I was a salesman with them in the late 60's early 70's.
ReplyDeleteHi Steve. I came accross your blog after googling Dunns Garage Sunderland. It brought back happy memories. I worked for Dunns as a salesman late 60's early 70's.
ReplyDeleteMy own 1976 TR7 was supplied from Dunn's Garages. I have the original 'Passport to Service' book with the garage stamp, showing car sold new on 2nd August 1976. This was a Monday, so presumably the first day for collection of new cars (did garages open on a Sunday back then?).
ReplyDeletePaul some garages were open very long hours. I know a few opened 24 hours and even 7 days a week. I think car sales hours were shorter. The long hours would have been to provide recovery and repair services.
ReplyDeleteI was the Triumph factory Service rep for the North East in the sixties until I transferred to BL New Zealand in 1972. Dunns of Sunderland were my very top, favourite distributors in a territory which stretched from the Humber to the Scottish border and well over a hundred Triumph outlets. The Service Manager at Roker Avenue, Arthur Jobling, was without a shadow of doubt, the best Service Manager I ever met and I’ve met hundreds! Brilliant bunch of people, Atholl and Eric Dunn, John Churchill and co. and all of their staff were the very best. If only I had had more dealers like them, my life would have been very much easier! Apologies for my lack of photos, but photography wasn’t as easy as it is today of course .Eric Dunn incidentally was a fighter pilot and flew Hurricanes against the Japanese in Burma. His aircraft was called “Ginga Dun”, a tribute to his auburn hair and a nice pun I think. The ten years or so that I worked this patch was without a doubt some of the happiest of my long working life which I am proud to say was evinced as an apprentice at the Daimler Motor Co in Coventry. I do hope some of this might be of interest, I’ve been a Triumph fanatic for far longer than I care to remember. So many wonderful memories of times and friends long gone by!
ReplyDeleteBest regards to all Triumph enthusiasts,
John Wheeler
John thanks very much for your comments. Eric Dunn sounds like a real action hero.
