This is my second article about Broadfields Garage & Engineering Co Ltd, Standard House, Cockfosters in North London.  This time I am covering the subject of Standard Triumph Sales and Service Weeks in more detail.  You can read part 1 here:

For many years Standard Triumph Distributors and Dealers throughout the country held Annual Standard and Triumph Service Weeks. These are usually staged in cooperation with the Standard Service and Spares Division who sent special displays. Standard Service Engineers attended ready to give owners the advantage of their special knowledge.

Standard and Triumph owners in the area were invited to bring their cars in for inspection during the period so that they could be reported upon by the Standard experts free of charge. The increasing popularity of these Service Weeks is reflected in the following records over a period of seven years kept by Broadfields Garage & Engineering Co. Ltd.

Many senior members of The Standard Motor Co. Ltd attended the first day of the Service Week at Broadfields Garage and Engineering Co. Ltd in 1958. Among those who can be recognised are right to left --Mr.F. E. Higham, Director of Home Sales; Mr.P. W.Bingham, London Manager; Mr. H. E. Pugh, Spares Manager; Colonel Ronald Maude; Mr. N. A. G. Black, Spares Executive, London.

Uno Ranch a biography

Uno Ranch was born on December 5, 1907 in Gothenburg and died in 1999. He was a Swedish businessman and pilot. He was the son of the coffee maker Wilhelm Ranch. From 1954 to death he lived in Villa Beyer in Lorensberg's villastad.

After finishing the Carlstedt Real School in 1922, he attended the Technical Private School, which was a two-year further education needed to study at Chalmers University of Technology. But after a year he got enough and left school.

He arranged an internship at Örebro Flygkompani, which was based at Tingstadsvass. Here he was allowed to keep the aircraft in flyable condition by replacing oil and carrying out easier repairs. After a short time working at an import and export company in 1924, he obtained his father's permission to travel to Germany.  In Germany he studied German plus flights and engine technology at Weimarer Flugzeugbau. When he returned to Gothenburg in 1926, it was time to practise the skills he now had from Germany he was placed as a mechanic at F3.

Ranch started the company Motor Company Uno Ranch in 1928. The firm grew strongly when he managed to acquire the General Agency for Zenith motorcycles. He also became representative of the Bugatti car brand.

He was a Bugatti driver in the 1930s and specialized in speed competitions. During the 1930s he achieved several Swedish records. In 1945 he got the General Agency for Triumph motorcycles. Starting in the 1950s he also became General Agent for Triumphs cars. In 1967, he lost the agency to the manufacturer.

In flight situations, he was General Agent for the British Jet Star Boot System BTH.

During his life Uno Ranch amassed more than 10,300 flight hours and was approved pilot for more than 50 different aircraft types. He also became Sweden's oldest aviator. At the age of 83, he was active pilot and owner of two private planes, a Saab 91A Safir and a 2-engine airliner of the type de Havilland DH.104 Doves with seating for 11 passengers.

Henlys had many branches over the year including this one in Ashford Kent.  Henlys Ashford was based at a prominent site on Godinton Road, Ashford.

Hebden Knee Motors Ltd of Trowbridge - Triumph Car Dealers 96

Hebden Knee Motors Ltd of Trowbridge feature in this article in my series about Triumph car dealers.

Origins

The Hebden Knee motor car business was started in 1929 and developed by John Knee.  The Knee family business empire started in Trowbridge. There are still several businesses trading.

Taken over by Wadham Stringer

It was reported in the 1st October 1976 edition of Commercial Motor that

Wadham Stringer have reached agreement for the acquisition of the entire share capital of Hebden Knee Motors Ltd, Rover and Triumph distributors and dealers for West Wiltshire.

The purchase price is £261,000 but this is settled with the issue of 265,000 Wadham Stringer Limited ordinary shares with a cash payment £155,000.

Control of the Hebden Knee copany will mean Wadham Stringer can consolidate their position in West Wiltshire.

This post is about The Darwall Garage Ltd and Hewitts of Walsall a Triumph car dealer.

The Darwall Garage Ltd taken over

It was reported in the Standard Triumph Review of March 1962:

As from January 29th the business of The Darwall Garage Ltd. of Darwall Street, WalsalI, was taken over by Hewitts Garages Ltd. of Stourbridge.

The Darwall Garage Ltd. which was founded by the late Mr. C. F. Woodall in 1915 has been a Distributor for StandardTriumph for 47 years.

The present Managing Director, Mr. C. E. Woodall, is now retiring after being in this family business for 44 years.

The business will be carried on in the name of Hewitts Garages Ltd. from the Darwall Street premises in Walsall as before. The family connection will be continued since Mr. G. R. RoIlitt, who has been with The Darwall Garage Ltd. for many years, is joining the Board of Hewitts Garages Ltd. and will remain at Walsall to manage the business.

A liquidator was appointed to the Darwall Garage Ltd company on 19 December 1962. 

Charles Edgar Woodhall

Studied engineering at Birmingham Central Technical College. The elder son of the late C. F. Woodall, an early entrant to the Motor Industry and founder and Director of the firm in 1918. Became Managing Director in 1947. Recreation: Golf. Married, 1947. Private Address: 25, Hardwick Road, Streetly, Sutton Coldfield. Telephone: Streetly 7624.  

Standard Fleet

It was reported in the Standard Car Review of February 1938 that a large fleet of Standard "Nines" recently supplied by The Darwall Garage Ltd of Darwall Street, Walsall, to a well.known Birmingham firm for the use of their representatives. This firm have used Standard cars for many years now.
